In the spring of 1949, a little girl fell into a well while playing near her home in San Marino. The ultimately unsuccessful rescue attempt captured the nation’s attention. William Deverell, director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West, will examine the event from the vantage point of history and offer some thoughts as to why it garnered such remarkable attention.
